Coaching a Baby to Become an 'British Gentleman' – Is It Worth the Cost?

Child education concept
The firm behind the advert explains that what seems like "extravagance or oddity" is actually "purposeful commitment in early education".

"Parents located in North London is looking for an extraordinary and skilled tutor to support their smallest child on his first steps to growing into an British gentleman."

Upon seeing this listing, you might easily miss the phrase "beginning" as simple a turn of phrase.

Yet, it may be the crucial aspect of this distinctive employment listing, as it attempts to hire a teacher for a infant.

Numerous of responses have already been received since the unnamed family published their search for the highly paid tutor, who needs to be "a uniquely qualified person".

During the past few weeks, the listing has gained notice across the news, with many questioning why?

Progressive Approach

A tutoring expert, CEO and founder of Tutors International, which is helping the family in their hunt, explained that notwithstanding first scepticism, he viewed the concept "far sighted", and "progressive".

When he met the family, he said they understood the atypical character of their request, and how early in age their son is.

However, they explained that they "didn't want to wait any longer" to get a tutor, as they had postponed until their elder sibling was five, and by that point "cultural conditioning had already taken hold".

But what does the family mean by "cultural predisposition"?

It's "everything", he responded. "The way you eat, the way you speak".

He stated the older sibling had picked up "really subtle, non-verbal cues" from the family, and had assumed their cultural habits. The family told Adam they did not want this pattern to happen again with their younger child.

The plan: To hire a British tutor, who must speak with RP, to influence the baby from the very start.

Tutoring discussion
The education firm say the advert has started a broader discussion about how households regard learning, advantage and the role of cultural environment in learning.

Natural Absorption

"A lot of the education at the outset here is kind of osmotic," said the expert.

It's via this osmosis that the family are hoping the child will acquire the UK customs they aim to impart.

Adam explained the tutor had to be somebody who studied at "prestigious academies – similar types of schools as the family plan to send their son to".

"The instructor must be the appropriate candidate, they'll be doing things they don't even know they're doing, just naturally," he commented.

Cost Not Relevant

The family explained to Adam the successful candidate should ideally also have understanding of or passion in riding, skiing, the arts and instrumental training so as to influence the child in a broad spectrum of hobbies.

More than that though, he explained the family desired the tutor to sign up the child on a variety of lessons so the child would be "equestrian training and picking up an instrument by the time they are about three years old".

In the family's view, assisting their son develop into a "UK sophisticate" will bring about achievement and open doors.

"For all the advantages and disadvantages of that, because it's undoubtedly a status symbol," he adds.

However, despite all this guidance in "UK identity", might the child pick up alleged cultural influence from the international family he is raised by regardless?

"Absolutely", answered he. "The parents realize this might not succeed, but they've merely embraced the attitude of, 'let's give it a go and let's go as quickly as we can', because the price of it is irrelevant," he said.

Impractical

There are some in the education sector who share those doubts.

Peter Cui, CEO and founder of a tutoring service, who also offer personal educators, wrote that "the process of embracing two identities, or in fact, forming one's identity, is something that must be grown into, not designed."

He noted that he had relocated from China to the United Kingdom at the period of childhood, and had been raised experiencing and embodying both cultures. He continued to be educated at a prestigious UK institution.

The executive was the first person hailing from China to be chosen to the post of Treasurer of the university debating society.

"The concept that one individual can serve as a embodiment of UK identity, an individual who can in some way impart the qualities of a British gentleman to a one-year-old child, appears optimistic and unfeasible," he commented.

"From my perspective, employing a distinctly UK tutor from babyhood will does not instantly achieve the result they hope for.

"I did not have that kind of mentor, and yet I have been fortunate enough to live many of the situations they hope for their son."

He added: "The reality is, cultural identity should not be forced from the external environment; it must be selected, and it must be internally driven."

Acquiring Englishness

Certainly, UK identity is something Adam hopes can be educated – and marketed.

"In my view the reality that the international society views us in this regard is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
